Leadership
"The credit belongs to those who are actually in the arena, who strive valiantly; who know the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spend themselves in a worthy cause; who at the best, know the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if they fail, fail while daring greatly, so that their place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat." ~Theodore Roosevelt~
Leadership can be defined as the ability to empower others and to help individuals or a group achieve their goals and objectives. Leaders guide others to recognize and realize their potential. They envision a more globally minded and multicultural world and help build such a community. By being open-minded and committed, a leader makes unique contributions to the university and community. The quote, "Real leaders are ordinary people with extraordinary determination" is very true.
Service
"We believe that service constitutes a vital part of an undergraduate education. It offers opportunities that cannot be obtained in any other way. And such experience may be one of the first truly meaningful acts in a young person's life." ~Ernest L. Boyer~
Service is rendered voluntarily without regard for personal gain or reward and motivated only by the causes, concerns, events or needs at hand to the campus and/or larger community. Please keep in mind that service and leadership activities are not limited to involvement in student government or living groups, but can be any type of service the student has given to the university or community.
Academics
"Lend me the stone solid strength of the past and I will lend you wings to the future." ~Robinson Jeffers~
Academic achievement consists of acquiring the formal skills and talents critical for investing in the future, for oneself and one’s community. Academics is the intellectual pursuit that transcends grades and reflects a real interest in learning for a deeper understanding of the world and its people.
